Why the Pull Back Car?
FEB 2026
As far as I can tell, Darda, a German company from the 1970's, was the first to design these pull-back cars. , actually a West-German company, from the 1970's. They are really high quality and …
Apparently the cars can get up to 30 mph! I bought a few on Ebay and they go fast.
How Do We Play With This Car?
In case you forgot how these fun toys worked.
Let's Open Up the Car
It's just a toy, there can't be that many parts, right?
There's a lot to Discuss, But Let's Focus on the Spring First
Hidden inside the motor of the car is a unique spring called a spiral spring. When the spring is wound, it stores energy, and when it's released, it converts that energy into rotational movement. Let's go find the spring.
Spring Cap
Spring Gear, R
Spiral Spring
Spring Gear, L
The Spring Cap keeps the Spring contained. The two Spring Gears interface with the Spring and help wind it.
In order to wind up the spring and build up energy, the Spring Gears must rotate in different directions. One rotates the outside of the spring Clockwise (CW) while the other rotates the inside of the spring Counterclockwise (CCW). If we take a cross section of the gear assembly, we can get a closer look at how the winding works.
The start of the Spring into a notch in the Spring Gear (R)
The end of the Spring hooks around the shaft of the Spring Gear (R)
Next, we need to figure out how to wind up the spring with the turning of the car wheel. But first, we need to understand the basics of gears!
Let's Talk About Gears
Winding the spiral spring requires a lot of force. But this is a toy for kids, so how can we make it easier? The answer is gears! Gears give the kids a mechanical advantage.
There's a lot that we could say about gears. But for the purposes of this analysis, we mainly need to focus on one thing: gears can be used to multiply torque. Let's look at a simple two spur-gear system.
So with the same amount of input Force, we can multiply the torque generated by the system. Magic!
Let's explore the Gear Train of the Car
There are six unique gears living inside this toy car. They each have a purpose and work together. Let's walk through each one.
Now Let's Compare Two Modes: Driving & Winding
If the car is in drive mode, the left and right gear assemblies operate independently. If the car is pressed down, the gear system works as one to wind the spring.
What if we separate the Gears to Make this more clear?
We can rearrange the gear system without changing its functionality. Now we can see everything happening at once.
Okay, Time To Walk Through the Mechanism
Let's walk through the pencil mechanism, step by step, to understand how it all works
